PHOTOJOURNALISM Flight 1.0 - Tricking
Trickers putting on a display of aerial artistry, defying the laws of gravity and human movement. Basingstoke. 2012
So what is tricking? Tricking is the informal name of a type of acrobatics derived from martial arts that includes techniques found in gymnastics, b-boying, and similar disciplines. Tricking differs from other similar artforms or street sports, in that expression and exploration are more heavily favored. These photos hope to capture the raw beauty and weightlessness experienced within the fast paced movements of the jumps, flips, kicks and twists.

VIRAL VIDEO Oxfam - DIY Campaign Promo and Documentary
Oxfam DIY Fashion Campaign Video and Documentary created by Drew Cox
I was approached by the Creative Agency, Think Espionage to come up with a set of visuals for Oxfam's latest campaign. I suggested the idea of a combination of a Viral Fashion Promo, documentary video and photography to record the process of the Oxfam DIY Campaign as it ran for the course of the entire 2009 summer season.
Festivals, Fashion shows, Music, Behind the Scenes, Store Re-designs, Shop Openings, and all led by the always iconic designer Mrs Jones. I also photographed the campaign; photoshoots, workshops, all festivals, behind the scenes and all portariture of Mrs Jones. for a feature by ID Magazine. Photos below.
The 1st promo video was created using a combination of rotoscoping, hand made models, stop frame animation and motion graphics, by the collaborative team of Drew Cox and Jonny Harris to coincide with the launch of the Oxfam DIY Campaign and the opening of the first OXFAM DIY Store in Camden, London. The video was also showcased on the large festival screens throughout the summer festival season, Glastonbury, Leeds, Reading and Bestival, as part of Oxfams campaign to raise awareness of the project.
Music credits go to James Powell and Pete Devlin.

COMMERCIAL Shakespear's Globe presents The God of Soho
Big God’s mind is crumbling, Mrs God has lost her looks and they can’t stop arguing. Their daughter, the Goddess of Love has been rejected and banished to earth. Meanwhile - in Essex - glamorous reality TV star Natty has had some fetish items stolen that threaten to expose her relationship with rock star Baz to the media.
Award-winning writer Chris Hannan’s moving, hectic and hilarious new play comes luridly to life on the streets of Soho, in a world of addiction to drugs and handbags, to flash-bulbs and tabloid exposure, and the overwhelming need for attention.
The cast of loveable misfits includes Phil Daniels (Quadrophenia, A Clockwork Orange at the RSC, Eastenders, The Beggar's Opera at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre) playing Big God, Emma Pierson as Natty (Little Dorrit, Hotel Babylon) and Edward Hogg (Bunny and the Bull, White Lightnin' and Woyzeck at The Gate) as Baz.

DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY - Wallacedene Informal Housing
Documentary project on some of the people I met in Wallacedean, in Cape Town, South Africa. Drugs, guns and crime are extremely rife in this area and gang mentality plays an important part in how you learn to survive. At whatever cost? But there are many different types of gangs and not all of them are about killing and murder. There are so many stories of people just trying to make a path for themselves and their families out of their hardships.
I met Judah, piercing blue eyes and the locks of an Egyprian Pharoah. He had lived in Wallacedean all his life and had built his own music studio, out of corregated iron and wood, out the back of his friends house. He spoke about a real inspirational sense of music providing the key to escaping his surroundings and taking him to where ever his heart desired. I really respect this mentality and the raw passion that all the people that I met in this area put into their respective crafts and ways of life, whether it be music, cars, drugs, clothes, whatever. These guys wear their hearts on their sleeves...
Its not about where you are born its about how you carry yourself and respect your family. 2011 Photography, Photojournalism, Documentary -

EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY Furousha - Ghosts of Tokyo
Homeless stories from Tokyo. By Drew Cox. 2009.
The area of Sanya, located in the Taito ward of Tokyo, is home to one of the largest populations of homeless people or 'Furousha' in the city of Tokyo. Throughout Tokyo's history, the area now called Sanya, located in the east of Tokyo was a no go area, and during the Edo period was where prisoners were sent to be executed. The modern Sanya was created after World War II, when Tokyo's homeless were sheltered there in the ever growing number of blue refuge tents. The area is now a eclectic, bustling network of local faces, artists, travelers, hippies and those people that do not want to been found.
Many wondering souls roam the quiet rustic streets. Outcast and neglected from society, many of these individuals have found refuge in many areas around the parks and train stations of the city, but seem primarily to have found solice and some sense of community in this unique oasis of Tokyo. Where many of them, previous day laborers, came to seek work. Government estimates put the total number of people sleeping on the streets at well over 300 people every night, just in the Sanya area.
The one strip of road, running near Minami Senju train station, is completely over run with people sleeping rough, primarily men but also a few women. Often a couple hundred people gather under the shelter of the old arcade shopping strip, overlooked by a constant police presence.
Most of the people I met, were all very friendly, hospitable and accommodating, but had given up an existence within formal society, for whatever their individual reasons. Alcohol abuse is high and mental illness and sickness seem to be a large problem due to their choice of lifestyle.
There are a few organizations providing support, primarily government subsidiaries, NGO's, local christian aids and charities who periodically provide soup kitchens, hand out blankets and clothing and try their best to cope with the ever increasing number of people fleeing to the streets.
The problem is a largely neglected issue in Japan which just seems to be completely overlooked by the government and swept beneath the ever growing blanket of the current recession. 2011 Photojournalism, Photography, Documentary -

VIRAL VIDEO The Affair - Milk with Knives
Video project created for The-Affair. Fashioned on literature, the concept takes inspiration from the classic dystopian novel by Anthony Burgess, 'A Clockwork Orange'. The video is based on the passage from the book, 'Milk with Knives', a conceptualised view into the hedonstic, sexual desires of popular youth culture and the violence that spawns from these nihilistic notions of reality.
Milk is the fluid to freedom, the fuel to the fire.
The knife, the power and unpredictablity of youth.
And television takes its place as popular cultures source of power and direction, its impotent voice drowned by the restlessness of disembodied anger.

FASHION FILM Jack Wills - India Summer Catalogue
Fashion film for British lifestyle and fashion brand Jack Wills. The client approached me with the idea of creating a lifestyle promo in the form of a 'university traveller' lifestyle video. I wanted to shoot the films on super 8 to really add to the nastolgic feel of the clips and by shooting hand held I was able to give the film a very simplistic and raw look, that worked with the concept of the brief. The film was shot in Jaipur, India. 2007
